Meet the Team
The CycleSync Study is supported by a multidisciplinary research team committed to improving understanding of female physiology, wearable data, and digital health research.
Dr. Sinéad Holden,
University College Dublin
Principal Investigator
Dr Sinéad Holden, Assistant Professor in Sport and Exercise Physiology and Ad
Astra Fellow (UCD School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science &
Institute for Sport and Health, UCD). Her research interests include wearable and
health technologies and data analytics to optimize strategies for enhancing human
health, well-being, and athletic performance across the lifespan. As a member of the
Trials Methodology Research Network, she progresses real-world data into clinical
research. She has a special interest in Women’s health in sport and Exercise across
the life-course and serves on the leadership group for míde, the Irish Women in
Sport Research Consortium, which brings together researchers across physiology,
endocrinology, sociology, psychology, and healthcare. She has >80 peer reviewed
publications, >1.5 million Euro in funding (primary and co-investigator combined).
Prof. Brian MacNamee
University College Dublin
Co-Principal Investigator
A. Prof. Brian MacNamee is UCD Site Director for the Insight Research Ireland
Centre for Data Analytics & Co-Director of the Research Ireland Centre for Research
Training in Machine Learning (UCD School of Computer Science). Brian brings
extensive expertise in machine learning methods designed for real-world, large-
scale, and imperfect datasets—directly aligned with the challenges of wearable
physiology and menstrual health data. His research spans methodological innovation
and applied impact with significant experience in cross-sectoral industry
collaborations. His work has included applying machine learning to complex sensor
datasets in health, pregnancy, and other applied domains, with a strong emphasis on
interpretable and responsible AI.
Prof. Brian Caulfield
University College Dublin
Co-investigator
Prof. Brian Caulfield is Full Professor of Physiotherapy and former Director of
Insight@UCD (2013-2023). Professor Caulfield brings internationally recognised
expertise in digital health, wearable sensor technologies, and the development and
validation of digital biomarkers across health, sport, and clinical contexts. His work
has directly informed product development, regulatory evaluation, and deployment of
sensor-based health technologies.
Evgenia Angelidi
University College Dublin
Research Engineer
Evgenia Angelidi is a Research Engineer working at Insight Research Ireland Centre
for Data Analytics and is responsible for developing and maintaining the CycleSync
Data donation platform. With a BSc in Sports Science and MSc in Data Science,
Evgenia brings a unique blend of software development, data science, machine learning, and technical
expertise alongside a fundamental domain understanding of issues facing women in
Sport and Exercise Science. Her work focuses on digital health innovation and the application
of wearable and health data to support research-driven and real-world healthcare solutions.
Eline De Jager
University College Dublin
PhD Student
Eline is a PhD student at the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports
Science in UCD. Eline came to her current role with a BSc in Life, Science and
Technology from University of Groningen and an MSc In Sports Sciences, during
which she published a scientific article on female athletic performance and female-specific
health challenges. Her current PhD focus is on mobile and wearable technology in female
athletes. This includes qualitative research to learn about women’s lived experiences of
mobile applications for menstrual cycle tracking in female athletes, as well as experimental
studies on the effect of the menstrual cycle on wearable derived biometric data.
