Heart Rate Variability and Female Physiology: An Anonymous Digital Citizen Science Study
The CycleSync study is a global digital citizen science project investigating how female physiology—particularly the menstrual cycle—interacts with heart rate variability (HRV) and other health data collected from wearable devices in everyday life.
Led by researchers at University College Dublin, the study integrates survey responses, smartphone data, and wearable technology to better understand patterns in women’s health, wellbeing, and performance. Although wearable technology is rapidly advancing, female physiology remains underrepresented in many data models. CycleSync aims to address this gap by collecting large-scale, real-world data from women across different life stages.
Using advanced data analytics and machine learning, the study seeks to generate new insights into how physiological changes affect recovery, readiness, and overall wellbeing. The findings will contribute to:
• Future research in women’s health and sports science
• The development of more inclusive wearable technologies
• Evidence-based recommendations for health, wellbeing, and performance
Who is it for?
Women aged 18+ who use a compatible wearable device and track their menstrual cycle alongside wearable-captured measurements.
How long does it take?
The study takes approximately 5 minutes to complete online.
Is it anonymous?
Yes. Participation is anonymous and no personal identifiers are collected.
Who can take part?
You may be able to participate if you:
- Are a female aged 18+
- Use a compatible wearable (e.g. Oura or certain Garmin devices)
- Track your menstrual cycle alongside wearable-captured measurements
What does participation involve?
- Complete a short questionnaire
- Optionally donate existing wearable data
- Select which data types you wish to donate
Your privacy matters
Participation is completely anonymous. Donated datasets cannot be linked back to individual participants.
